Five from Fishbone

Wherein one of the great bands

Only caught them once in concert. Around 1991, and Bytches with Problems opened. Might be the best concert ever. Took a Doc marten to the side of the head from someone crowd-surfing. Knocked my glasses clear off'n my head. I started to reach towards the floor to pick them up and about four hands reached down and yanked me up. Kept me from being trampled to death. Thanks! Damn good time.

New album due in April.

I've got the "Truth and Soul" album, and I really don't know why I don't have more. They are fantastic.

Assuming wiki is correct, I did not know this: "the band ironically performed 'Jamaica Ska' in the Annette Funicello/Frankie Avalon reunion movie Back to the Beach."

I'm not a big fan of the psychotically angry "Chim Chim's Bad Ass Revenge." Not that their anger isn't deserved.

If you like "Truth and Soul" I'd suggesting getting "Fishbone and the Familyhood Nextperience Present: The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx."

I saw 'em a couple of times in the '80s, once in D.C. with Trouble Funk as the opening act. It got funky in there...

I'm wild about Fishbone. Have been since their second album, "In Your Face"... song-for-song, still my fave, just edging "Reality of My Surroundings."

I still remember reading, circa '85, Greg Tate's piece in the Village Voice, wherein he proclaimed: "I have seen the future, and it is Fishbone." That's the first I'd ever heard of the band.

In '86, Fishbone actually appeared and performed in an episode of an otherwise-straight ABC cop show called "Heart of the City." I vividly remember their "SNL" appearance when "Reality of My Surroundings" came out, with Angelo climbing the walls...

There are some tasty rarities floating around. A hilarious quirky track called "Hide Behind My Glasses," on the "Bonin' in the Boneyard" EP; a hard-swinging cover of Parliament's "The Goose" on "Nuttasaurusmeg."

I actually saw Angelo Moore in the crowd at a Bootsy Collins show at House of Blues, L.A. (Jeremy Piven too!)

All that said, don't know if I'll break my neck to get the new CD. The last few haven't tickled my fancy.
