  • The Tao of Pooh, Benjamin Hoff. He created a website to explain why he will no longer write books--publishers are evil.

Hoff's complaints are pretty typical of what used to be called "mid-list" authors: not obscurities, but not superstars, either. His main problem is that large corporations lack imagination, and that he's not willing to sacrifice the chance at glory to shift to actually small publishers which would work with him.

I love the Pooh and Piglet books: they're actually very good discussions of traditional values and concepts. But I can't imagine thinking that you could make a career out of that kind of pastiche without running into soulless minions of orthodoxy at every turn.
