Short list

Wherein local communities are preparing to take up arms to defend our precious fluids from those down river usurpers in Alabama

Welcome back

Answers are now provided (in the comments) for last week's match the lyrics to the artist. As even I can't match up my own music, this Thursday's quiz will be a little easier.

Tuesday Trivia LXVII. Got another #7 correct. That makes two in a row. Unless I lost count and it's really three. Also had two other correct answers for a not so grand total of three. This week:

  1. Michael Jordan
  2. Confession: I have a horrible time remembering the state capitals. I never had to memorize them and now it's a knowledge pit of darkness. So put me down for "no idea."
  3. Two guessing approaches for this one. Pick a company that makes electric and stringed instruments or pick a World I hero. All I have is Fender.
  4. Gawain
  5. Sir Edmund Hillary
  6. skipping this one
  7. got nothing on this one

Looks like just one.

2. St. Paul, MN? I doubt Lincoln, Nebraska counts.
3. WWI heroes: York? Guitars: Gibson?

On #1, I doubt Jordan, as his good years were way behind him. I'd guess an Olympian instead, but I don't remember anyone other than Ian Thorpe really dominating Sydney, so I'll go with Tiger Woods instead (who won 3 majors that year).

On #2, Charlotte, NC comes to mind (named for Charles I, who's head was kindly removed from his body by Oliver Cromwell). A case could be made for Sacramento, I suppose as it's named in a round about way after Jesus, but I doubt that's what he's going for. St. Paul was a martyr, and it is the capital of Minnesota, so that works, too.

#3 Rickenbauker is a name I associate with Guitars and WWI, so that'd be my guess.

#5 Hillary makes a lot more sense than Gandalf in Middle Earth (but the kiwis do love their association with those films, just not enough to put it on money)

#6 I'll admit to watching that dumb show in the past, so I know it is NYC (1st season, and the one shot in 2000), but he'll get people also saying Los Angeles as the 2nd season and the season currently filming (but not yet aired) were shot here (Venice, and Hollywood, but both still technically city of Los Angeles).

#7 I refuse to believe that Frank Sinatra and John Wayne were ever romantically entangled, so I got nothing. Strange that Jovovich is the only woman on the list, probably a key in figuring it out, just don't know where it leads.

xwl has #'s 1 and 3 and I'll take his word for #6. justkim has #4

#2 can't be Charlotte, But since Sir Walter Raleigh was beheaded I think that makes North Carolina one of the states. If St. Paul is correct, then we have #2.

For #7 I know Alan Arkin was part of a successful singing group before becoming an actor. Have the others released albums?

Alan and Henry have children who became actors and Emilio is the son and brother of actors. Simplify -- what do Milla Jovovich and John Wayne have in common? John Wayne played Attila the Hun, and...wait a sec -- honestly, this popped in my head while I was trying to come up with a cheap joke -- didn't Peter Ustinov also play an Asian in a movie? Maybe that's it, they've all had yellowface roles. Any help with the others before I search IMDB?

Woohoo? Right state, wrong city on NC.

I've already searched Wiki and IMDB on the Q7, so here's my cheating aided speculation...

You might have something with the Asian thing, in Ultraviolet (never saw it looked it up), Milla plays Violet Song jat Shariff (which might be Korean/Arab?), and Ustinov played Charlie Chan in one film. Don't see any 'yellow face' credits for Arkin or Estevez, but did notice that Arkin played Clouseau once. Maybe it's a played roles made more famous by other actors connection?

Here's Milla's music video from her non-hit, but well reviewed album from 1994, but lots of actors have had albums, and again, Estevez hasn't done any band on the side projects that I know of, so I don't think it's a pop-hits connection (though a few of those on the list like Arkin, Jovovich and Wayne have surprising pop songs in their background).

Played historical figures is a throughline possibly, with Estevez=Billy the Kid, Arkin=Sigmund Freud, Jovovich=Joan of Arc, but lots of actors do biopics, so there would have to be something more than just that.

Confusing, question 7, but I still think Jovovich is the key to cracking it.

(and given that Q7 is supposed to be "google proof" I don't consider wiki/google/imdb help to be cheating on those questions (though it would be on 1-6))

Over at the Ken Jennings trivia thread at Snopes, they're leaning towards some sort of "acted/directed" with a close relative for #7. The question just asks what these people have in common, it doesn't say the relationship is unique.
