I'd rather live in a van down by the river

Wherein yuck to both

Instapundit reports: IN THE RACE FOR BEST ONLINE COMMUNITY, it's neck-and-neck between DailyKos and Little Green Footballs.

Living in a van down by the river would be like living in Bill Gates house compared to DailyKos and LGF. This will probably be the most depressing thing I read today.

It is depressing. It's been awhile since I've peeked at either, but before I've even reached comments in the double digits I usually click out muttering "what the hell is wrong with you people."

I've become convinced that online communities beyond a certain size are always going to be overwhelmed by self-generated trolls, and conversations between regulars are going to be impenetrable (both incomprehensible and unjoinable) to even casual regular participants. I like my third- and forth-tier friends.....

I'd agree with that. Also, not to just pick on those two, but this isn't anything new. Long before blogs the same criticisms were being made in various newsgroups and email groups. I think in large part people join communities for who they're against as much as for who they want to be. So if groups define themselves by what they oppose, then they'll tend to be insular, reactive, and suspicious of strangers.

I should also note that not being much of a crowd person or joiner, I am predisposed to be suspicious of communities.
